Summary of Procedure:

In this exciting conclusion to the first three experiments, the two unknown compounds are identified by their melting points and comparison to known compounds.

Positive aspects of this experiment:

+ The combined information from the first four experiments gives a definitive identification of the unknown compounds.

+ Melting point determination is a basic Organic Chemistry technique.

+ Melting points can be done with a small amount of sample.

Neutral (may be positive or negative) aspects of this experiment:

± It takes patience to wait for the oil bath to cool down. However, this is usually a short experiment. In the past, I have asked students to determine the melting points of each unknown which tends to make the experiment last longer.

Negative aspects of this experiment:

- Thiele tubes are messy. This is an oily lab.

Inquiry & Extension Ideas:

● The variance of literature melting points is a good discussion topic.
