Summary of Procedure:
"The Kinetic Investigation of Substitution" is a good lab to do during the nucleophilic substitution chapter.

Positive aspects of this experiment:
+ It is a departure from the usual synthesis experiments that populate most sophomore organic chemistry laboratory calendars.
+ The use of data collection, comparison, and analysis is particularly instructive.
Neutral (may be positive or negative) aspects of this experiment:
± I have always posted "class data" for this experiment that the students may use in their laboratory report.
Negative aspects of this experiment:
- This experiment requires very good liquid measurement skills. It is practically impossible to do this lab with any consistency using volumetric glass pipettes.
- It is very sensitive and the student data is often very scattered (imprecise).
Inquiry & Extension Ideas:
● You can use a similar procedure to determine whether the reaction proceeds with an SN1 or SN2 mechanism.
● With other forms of volume measurements (syringes and/or automatic pipettes) the reproducibility of the data could be greatly enhanced (I think).
