The Didehydrobromination of 1,2-dibromo-1,2-diphenylethane

Page history last edited by jbfriesen 1 yr ago

The Didehydrobromination of 1,2-dibromo-1,2-diphenylethane is an appropriate experiment for the Alkyne chapter that is typically covered during the first semester of Sophomore Organic Chemistry.

It is a classic synthesis lab with a recrystallizable product.

The GC-FID analysis of student products brought to light that an appreciable amount of starting material is present in many student samples as well as some interesting impurities and/or side products.

You can make the 1,2-dibromo-1,2-diphenyl starting material with the bromination of styrene.
